Description: List of applicants on each WIPO patent application. For each applicant, the document lists the applicant choice countries. These are the countries that are assigned to the particular applicant. Outside of the US, applicants generally correspond to patent assignees in the U.S. (i.e. generally the employers of the inventors). In the US patent system, inventors are considered the applicants. Hence, most WIPO applications list the inventors as applicants (in addition to listing the inventors are inventors). Typically, when inventors are listed as applicants, the variable applicant_choice_countries is listed as “(For US Only) .” In a separate file that we are posting with this data set, WIPOapp_applicant_inventors, we separate out those applicants that are also inventors.
