Description:
This file determines links between file WIPOapp_for_priority and file CNpub_for_priority. That is, we take the foreign priority claims in
the WIPO applications, which list a claim date, a claim country, and a patent
application number, and we take the foreign priority claims in the Chinese
published patents, which also lists a date, country, and an application number.
We merge the two files
on these three variables, after doing some light cleaning of the text field for
application number in both data sets. We
just keep track of the match of a app_numfix
and pub_no, by country. There maybe
multiple cases of overlap, but we don’t keep track of this.
The table at the bottom
of this file shows that Chinese patents claiming foreign priority have a
foreign priority claim match in WIPO at a rate of about 40 or 50 percent, for
the years 2005-2010 that we use in our analysis. Many firms do not use the WIPO application
process and that is the main reason why the match rate is lower for matching CNpub_for_priority records to WIPOapp_for_priority,
compared to matching CNpub_for_priority records to USapp_for_priority (which is about 80 percent or the
2005-2010 time period).

We start with
the 1,080,629 foreign priority claims in CNpub_for_priority.
We next select the 851,881 unique values of app_numfix. For each app_numfix,
we ask if the given app_numfix has at least one match
in WIPOapp_for_priority and table below reports the
results by year of Chinese published application.
